Technical Breakdowns, Defensive Rotation, and the Chart That Could Tell Us When This Ends Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TradingApologist Follow me on X: https://x.com/TradeApologist Trading Resources: https://www.tradingapologist.com TradingView Indicators: https://www.tradingview.com/u/TradingApologist/#published-scripts Technical breakdowns confirmed on both the SPX and NDX this week, with SMH closing down 9.1% and the RSI symmetrical triangle on the NASDAQ resolving to the downside. The divergence between strong fundamentals and fearful price action that we flagged on Thursday persisted right through Friday's session. The rotation picture tells the story clearly. XOP led the week up 7.6%, XLE up 4.8%, XLRE and XLU both up over 2%, while XLK fell 5.5% and XBI dropped 3%. Defensives, energy, and real estate outperforming while technology and semiconductors bleed is not a risk-on setup. But the broader context matters. Second presidential term midterm years historically have July and August as their weakest months, then outperform sharply in the back half with an average gain of nearly 10% in October through December. This correction is tracking that pattern well, and today's video uses time cycle analysis on the NDX to map out when the low could actually land — with the back half of August remaining the primary target before a recovery into year-end. In today's Weekly Market Recap we work through the SPX and NDX breakdown structure and time targets, sector rotation across XLF, KRE, XOP, XLE, XLRE, XLP, IGV, and MAGS, the semiconductor complex and key support levels, earnings names reporting this week including GOOGL, TSLA, IBM, NOW, and TXN, and a crypto check-in on BTC and SOL which look like they could buck the broader market trend.
